Now that I’m a mom, I’m finding myself becoming more and more a creature of habit. I like what I like and I want to have things around to make my life easier, happier & more productive. They aren’t necessarily things that I need because I’m a mom (aka the diaper bag).. they are like, the backbone to my sanity. They help me still feel like myself even though I’m a very different person than I was 9 months ago. And I know that as time goes on, I’ll be increasingly dependent on these things so..here are my 8 must-haves:
High waisted jeans
The ultimate mom jean, but thankfully they’re in style right now. haha. My favorite pair are stretchy, comfortable & can last a few wears without washing!
I don’t know what I’d do without mine. I’ve taken thousands of pictures of Rhett in the past 9 months and I don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. Additionally, printing them. It will be meaningful for me and for my future family to have a tangible piece of evidence that we existed in this time. Chatbooks is awesome (get your first book free with this code RRY6FERQ), shutterfly, artifact uprising, & mpix are all great places I’ve used to print.
Notepad or Notes app
For the never-ending to-do list. Having something pretty to write things down on is a special treat, but I find that the notes app on my phone is the first place I go when I need to start a list. And #babybrain morphs into #mombrain once you deliver, so if you want to remember ANYTHING, I beg you.. write it down!
A good dry shampoo
I have yet to find my miracle product (I’ve heard the Living Proof one is amaze), but that doesn’t make it any less vital. I used to be able to go a week without washing my hair, but now that it’s short it needs the extra help more frequently. And most days I just don’t have time to take a shower, wash my hair, dry & style it so dry shampoo is a life saver.
Face serum & cream
After Rhett was born, I started noticing the lines on my forehead were more pronounced and the 11 mark between my eyes was pretty deep. I’m not sure if being pregnant really had anything to do with it, but I know I needed to do something about it. I use Philosophy products at night and have seen a dramatic difference. If I could go back in time, I’d definitely tell my teenage self not to go to the tanning bed, let alone work at one for free tanning, because I’m paying for it now.
Mine is coffee; yours could be tea or diet coke or chocolates. It may not be the best for my teeth, but I function better when I’ve had a good cup of coffee in the morning. I think the Nespresso would be a game changer in producing a more decadent cup, but my Keurig is still going strong. I also tried making my own cold brew recently which was awesome, but I forgot to dilute it the first time– I was so jittery I felt like I couldn’t even get a complete thought out of my mouth! no bueno.
My sense of smell can have a strong influence on my emotions. Therefore, I like to always have a candle burning or my wax warmer on at the front door. Every time I walk by and smell it, my mood is lifted. Diffusing oils I’m sure is a very similar experience, but I just haven’t tried them myself yet.
Not to escape from my family, but to focus on myself and my needs. I find that when I take the time to get out alone, I come back re-energized and ready to tackle the needs of my guys and Riplee. Plus it’s important that Danny has the alone time to bond with Rhett! Making it a habit, scheduling, and treating this time as an appointment is something I know need to do better & will make it less stressful in the long-run. But I don’t have to leave the house do it, either! It could be a room I go to alone, taking a long bath, reading a book on the patio.. just a time and place where I can be responsible for only myself and get lost in my own thoughts. Stop yourself when you start thinking about the to-do list!!
What are some things you rely on to still feel like yourself?!
